Marketing can seem like a daunting task when you’re juggling all the needs of a small or emerging business – but it doesn’t have to be. It certainly means something a little different now than 10 years ago – with the explosion of social media and instant communication, there are hundreds of ways to reach your prospects and customers that don’t take a ton of your time or require professional skills. Some of the simplest ideas are the most effective. Here are a few tips to get started:

  • Develop your identity

What are you passionate about? What do you want your prospects, customers and evangelizers to know about you?

  • Market to the right audience

You can’t be a perfect fit for everyone, but you can get really good at messaging to a particular group. Get to know your customers!

  • Get on social media if you aren’t already

Online communities and social media can be a great starting point for developing your identity and showcasing your business. Try different media avenues to see what fits best – blogs, Instagram, Facebook, etc. Get your audience involved when posting – ask questions, do collaborations, share stories, spotlight customers wearing/using your stuff. Make friends, don’t fish for customers. That will happen naturally.

  • Campaign

Plan, and make a commitment to actively promote and market your business on a regular basis.

  • Give your stuff away

Prospects, Customers, Repeat Customers…everyone loves a little treat every now and again. And I bet they’ll tell their friends, too.

  • Attend Networking events in your community

Being active online is great – being active in the real world is too.

  • Be helpful

Answer small business questions, offer snippets of advice or “trade secrets.” Teach others about your passion!

  • Volunteer

Find a cause to get behind, that also aligns with your business vision. Plus, you’ll feel good.

  • Always have business cards – and let them speak your style!

One of the greatest things I’ve noticed about the emerging entrepreneur sphere is the idea of being competitive but playing nice. Do your customers overlap with other businesses’ customers? Try doing some collaborations or giveaways together; you’ll be amazed at how simple  teamwork can bring about new business. We can all be successful – get going now!
