I’ve seen this error myself, and I know many customers struggle with it based on the support calls we receive, as well as discussions amongst community members. The typical scenario is that you reboot or fire up your computer for the day, hoping to get a lot done, and when you open Sage ACT!, you receive an error such as “"The database could not be accessed. In order to access this database, check your network connection and verify that your database server is available. It may be necessary to disable any firewall software...". Despite improvements made to auto-correct this issue, it may require manual intervention, and that’s exactly what you’ll learn how to do in this week’s tip!
Starting the Microsoft ® SQL Server ® Service:
Typically the previously referenced error is displayed because the Microsoft® SQL Server® service is not running. To start the service:
1. Open the Run/Search box:
For Windows XP®: Click Start > Run.
For Windows Vista® and Windows® 7, click Start, and then click in the Search box.
2. Type services.msc and press the Enter key. The Services panel appears.
3. Locate the SQL Server Browser and SQL Server (ACT7) services:
If the “Status” for either is Started, right-click on each service and select Restart.
If the “Status” field for either is blank, right click on the service and select Start.
4. After the services have successfully started, attempt to open your database!
Changing the Startup Type to Automatic
To ensure your Microsoft SQL Services start up properly the next time you reboot, verify the "Startup Type" for each service is set to "Automatic".
1. Right-click each service (SQL Server Browser or SQL Server (ACT7)), and then select Properties.
2. In the Properties dialog box, click the Startup type list, and select Automatic.
3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
4. When complete, the “Status” column will display Started, and the “Startup Type” will display Automatic.
