First off - I support all of Jeff Graingers excellent ideas on this forum for tiding up and rationalising the use of the Documents tab, but I'd like to add a couple of other suggestions on top;
1. Can we have a shortcut to a folder stored within the documen tab - not just a shortcut to a file. (Yes, I know there is a work-around for this, but it shouldn't be necessary to work this way)
2. Once we have shortcuts to folders / files - I would then like to be able to have those reference by DropBox account for storage or files / folders. This would reduce the size of my attachments folder (and associated backups) as well as giving non-ACT users access to some of my documents / folders to update.
Can we add a #3 to this which is the ability to cut and paste a document to the documents tab? Currently we have to move the document to the desktop then go to "add document". I would like to be able to copy a document attached to an email (or anywhere else) and then paste directly into the document tab.
And #4 which is that the Name column in the Documents Tab just displays the name of the file you create a link to, not the whole file path. This is shown in the Path column, so we don't need it twice
Please take a look at my new Act! AddOn product called FasterAct. www.fasteract.com
I believe that my product does what you are asking for.
I have a dedicated View Documents tab in my software, that accomplishes what you are asking for. Please check out my website, download the trial and try it out.
Let me know if this is what you had in mind.
