For clarity I think we should rename the "Companies" area to something else. "Organizations" perhaps?
This would help to distinguish between these records and the Company field in Contact view.
If someone asked you to lookup a company would they be expecting you to look in the Contact records or a Company records?
Agreed. We often deal with Government agencies, Municipalities, Associations, Unions, etc. where their information has to go in the "Company" records. "Organization" would be a much better wording - and much less confusing than the current nomenclature.
We have the same exact problem - I've created a new field in the company record called "organization" so it is a bit more descriptive than the field "industry". This will show if someone is an elementary school, state agency, cbo, etc.
I really wish companies were treated more like contacts though - it is a bad idea to assume there is always a contact associated with a company and to have no work arounds for the communication that goes on, especially in b2b (business to business) based organizations.
