Request error when trying to verify a new AEM profile

A new AEM is trying to send his first email blast but activate his sender profile first. When he sends the verification request from the email received from SP he gets a "Request Error. The server encountered an error processing the request..."  The only usual thing I can see is that he has no password on his Act! user account, but he has been able to create a Basic AEM account with a password. However, I have tried making his Act! password the same as his AEM account & it made no difference. Am I missing a basic step here somewhere?
