unable to open database.

I am running Act 2011 on a laptop running Windows 7 as a local database. My email is Lotus notes but I use Linkpoint 360 to attach lotus notes emails to Act. I have detached the.pad files and re attached using actdiag. I still get the unable to open the database. When I use the open database option it gives me a failed to connect to database, click on ok and I get object reference not set to an instance of the object. I have restarted the SQL server. Any suggestions?

Go to this thread and follow the instructions to remove the zero sized database.

The syntax must be followed exactly for it to work.

 

Once removed go back to my original suggestion below.

 

 

Now that you  can create a database we know that SQL is running.

 

I know you did this before but please try again the following -

 

Find the .PAD file you database and rename .OLD

 

Now in ACT select File - Open Share Database - (Ignore database in the list) Click Browse for Database

 

At bottom right change by selecting from  PAD to ADF file type.

 

Now browse to your database and try and open it.

Hi kelleym1,

Can you please let us know if you are experiencing the "unable to open the database" error in Act, or in Linkpoint 360?

If the error is within Act!, could you please try creating a new database. Does this complete, or are you presented with another error?

The error occurs in act. It comes when I'm trying to open the database ADF file. I am unable to create a database, the error is unable to create database.unable to connect to the microsaft SQL server

Are you trying to open the database with the ADF file on the machine where the database is located? Launshing with the ADF file won't work from a workstation.

Yes I'm on a local machine, the ADF file is on my hard drive

Please download the attached ResetSQL.bat file and run it as administrator in Windows.

 

Test accessing the database again after completing this.

 

Watch for any error messages that appear while running the .bat file. Let us know what they are if you see any.

Sorry long process, our new corporate security level would not allow me to run this program, just got my security level changed and ran it but still not working. get the same error

Are any errors displayed in the command prompt window when running the .bat file?

Could you let us know what exact error is displayed when running ActDiag on your PC?

Gary,

Thanks for all your help. I did not see any errors running the bat file. I just tried it again and I had not selected turn of password policy. I did it this time and I can now create a database. I am not able to access my existing database. I brings up the log in screen with my user name, when I click ok I get this message.
