thanks for your response. I did as you suggested. when I run the open existing database under the ADF file extension I get an error saying the database name already exists. Checking in actdiag, the database is in recovery but in a different folder. Act for windows 8.

Does the database listed in the other folder have a size against it or is it zero in ACTDIAG?
If it has a size take a look at the folder indicated, is there a database in there? If so try the rename PAD option again and try to open the .adf file for this database.

Go to this thread and follow the instructions to remove the zero sized database.
The syntax must be followed exactly for it to work.
Once removed go back to my original suggestion below.
Now that you can create a database we know that SQL is running.
I know you did this before but please try again the following -
Find the .PAD file you database and rename .OLD
Now in ACT select File - Open Share Database - (Ignore database in the list) Click Browse for Database
At bottom right change by selecting from PAD to ADF file type.
Now browse to your database and try and open it.

I updated Windows 10 as computer request.
Now I get same message as noted on this help link.
I ran the ResetSQL as posted on this thread but it did not unlock pad file.

I'm having same problems.
I ran the ResetSQL - no luck opening database.
Then I renamed SQL.pad to old.
Tried opening database & same error message - could not be access... ck network connection (this is single user laptop)... maybe necessary to disarm firewall softwall (same firewall no changes).
