"Last name" field grayed out...why?

"Last name" field grayed out...why?

Why are some fields, including "Last name" grayed out when I create a new database?  I can't find ANY way to edit them.

 

I need to use these fields in order to attach an email to a contact record.  

 

What do I need to do in order to make these fields usable?

Act automatically figures out first and last name fro the "Contact" field when you first create the contact. They cannot be individually edited.

 

You CAN, however, do a search for last or first names. This should work for email merges and contact searches as well.

How does it figure out what's in my mind before I type it in? 

 

I hit "new contact" and the field is grayed out. So, how does it get populated?  I don't get it.

The fields " first name & last name " are generated by the program based on the information entered in the contact field

these are system fields
