I installed the trial version of Sage ACT 2012 (220.127.116.11) on win7.
i followed the "Quick start for new users" and tried to import the contacts from outlook 2007.
when i go inside File --> import --> push next --> choose outlook --> choose typical import.
i get "catastrophic error" :
what is the problem ?

Usually I would export the data from Outlook to Excel and then do the cleanup in Excel first. you may be getting this error because of so bad or corrupted data in Outlook.
When doing the import I would also suggest you do the custom import and step through the wizard.
