how to copy contact layout to another database?

[ Edited ]

I have 2 databases, one for clients and one for ex-clients.  I've modified the contact layout on the client db and want to copy that layout to the exclient db.  Is there a straightforward way to to this?  It started when I tried to move the client data to the exclient and it wants me to map all the extra fields I've added.  I really need the layout on both db's to match.  I should add that the layouts drop down shows the same for both databases.

Thanks for any help.

This never works well, you would have to copy the layout, add the exact same field names and then make sure they all showed up on the layout. Much better to use a single database and differentiate existing clients from prospects using fields like the ID/Status field.

Thanks for the reply. I'd still like to have them on a separate database. Would it be possible to create a new, blank database and then copy the contact layout and fields to the blank database?
