error loading layout

using act 2008 and when selecting either the companies or groups layouts receive an "error loading the layout" message in the top right window. i have replaced all the companies layouts from a backup location but to no avail. Error persists regardless of which layout is selected from the "layout" drop down menu.

Does the same thing happen if you create a new database in the same file location as your existing database? How about if you open the demo? If it's a shared database, you may need to check the permissions on the folder containing the layouts to make sure that you are authorized to use them.

If trying in the demo or creating a new database does not produce the same error, it's possible that the layouts could be corrupted. If you have a backup of the database that was taken with the Act! program, you can try to do a Restore As, see if the layouts work in the copy, and if so, try to copy them from the location of the copy of your database.
