When I tried to sign in to my Act program it gave me a message saying my database needed to be updated then proceeded to give me the option to back it up before updating. I followed the instructions and now I can't access my database. It will open the database I was using but does not have my contacts in it. Where do I find my database?

What is the name of the database that is opening? That will be at the upper left hand corner - following 'Sage ACT! - ' (depending on version).
Previously opened database are listed at the bottom of the File menu, do you see anything listed there? If yes, have you tried selecting it/them?
What version of ACT! are you running?
Are there other users of the database? Do they see the contacts?
