When I try to copy files to a CD to send to another ACT user, I get the message that the copy can't be completed because the 2 files (the .ADF and .ALF files) are still open in SQL server (ACT7) and I should close them and try again. ACT is not running and the files were closed in ACT before exiting. Other ACT files (.pad and the other db files) are copied fine,
Anybody know what gives ? I am a single user (not running on a network).

ACT! doesn't open the ADF and ALF files. they are opened by the SQL server when the computer boots up. Your best bet is the use the ACT! database backup and copy the zip file to the CD.

SQL runs all the time - even if you are not running the ACT! application.
So you can't just copy the files in Windows Explorer.
Easiest thing to do is to perform a File Backup, put that (zip file) on the CD, and then the other user (who has to be on the same release as you or later) will be able to do File.. Restore As to put it onto their machine.
Also - I am assuming you are on Pro (or basic) - if you are on Premium you will have to make a copy first in Pro format.
Assuming also that the data will remain separate from this point - otherwise you should be synchronising!

See this ACT! Knowledge Base article -
If you want to keep the two systems up-to-date with each other, you should look at sync
