To see if it something database specific, either open the Act! demo or create a new database and attempt a backup.
In the meantime - to make a backup >
- get everyone out of Act!
- on the computer hosting Act! > click on Windows Start > select Run
- enter the command 'Services.msc' and hit enter
- in Services > go to 'SQL Server (Act7)' > Stop the service
- you can now copy the database files (ADF, ALF, Database Files folder, and PAD)
- once copy complete > Start the service so you can access through Act! program

What you are describing sounds like an issue with the Xceed file compression system that ACT! uses for creating zip files for backups and remote databases. The current version of Xceed that we use is 3.7 and the .tmp file issue was known to happen in 3.6. To check this, browse to the following directory: C:\Program Files\ACT\Act for Windows. Scroll down to bottom and look for a group of files that start with Xceed. Right-click on these files, go to Properties and check the version. If it is 3.6, then this is may be causing the issue.
If you could, please go to Help/About ACT! and provide the full version number of ACT! you are using.
Note: Effective 6/1/13, Sage no longers provides support for the Act! software. This is now provided by Swiftpage.
