We have ACT! Pro 2012 installed on 5 computers in 3 different states, and want to be able to share the same database on all. I've seen the third-party cloud options. What other options might we have, preferably that don't involve monthly fees? I have VERY little knowledge about networking and servers.

Unless you want to share the data in real time the built in synchronization would do what you want.

If you have the proper internet connection and the proper networking hardware you can host the database yourself. Either via ACT! for Web (which you need the premium product to do) or via sync.
If you don't want to do any of that, then there are several hosting partners, myself included, that would love to talk with you.

Consider utilizing one of the ACT hosting providers. http://www.act.com/partners/hosting-providers/directory/
