1) Make sure the machine is up to date with Microsoft Critical Updates.
2) Install Office 2007 first and setup your Outlook to your liking.
4) Then install ACT!

Thanks Matthew. I have a brand new laptop with Vista Home Premium with SP1. I have turned windows update off as I find it loads a lot of unecessary stuff - do you think I need to enable and install the critical updates or will SP1 suffice?

You should be fine then,
Is this a 64bit operating system? If it is, I am afraid your ACT! 2008 product isn't going to work, you would need version 2009.
