What is "ACT! Documents Tab Add-In" actually for?

I've just upgraded some clients to Word, Excel and Powerpoint 2007.  I noticed that when opening files, there was a long wait and sometimes they wouldn't open at all.  I turned to the Add-Ins section first and unchecked the ACT! Documents Tab Add-In which seems to have resolved the issue.  Before I go trying to reinstall ACT on all my clients to see if that works too, can someone tell me what this Add-In actually does?  Or what functionality we will lose by disabling it?

I've successfully attached and detached files in the ACT Documents tab and opened files from it, even with the Add-In disabled.

Thanks!

Re: What is "ACT! Documents Tab Add-In" actually for?

For Excel, the 2 functions of the add-in are:

1. ability to attach the document to an Act! contact without changing screens.

2. set up mapping within Excel file to pull information directly from a Contact, Company, or Group.

Without the Excel add-in, you would need to open Act! to attach a document and would not have the ability to map Act! fields to the Excel document.

For Word, the main 2 functions are:

1. ability to attach the document to an Act! contact without changing screens.

2. ability to use MS Word as the word processor within the Act! application.  Used for creating templates for documents and emails.

Without the Word add-in, you would need to open Act! to attach a document and would only be able to use the Act! Word Processor (built-in) for creating templates.  Most installations really want this integration.

Sorry, I didn't know the add-in did different things dependant on the version.  Smiley Happy
