Value Cannot Be Null - ACT 2008 Premium for Workgroups

Can anyone tell me if they have seen this error message in ACT 2008 Premium:
 
Value cannot be null
Parameter name: criteria
 
I have looked at "required fields" and have not been able to identify a field that is marked as "required" and not filled in.  I cannot add a new contact on the contact side, the above error message appears.  I have been copying a contact as a work around but need to resolve this issue.  HELP.

Goto tools | preferences | select the tab duplicate checking | uncheck enable duplicate checking
this should take care of your issue
if not check the version of act. if it is 10.0.0.237
update act to 10.0.1
you can update by logging onto act.com goto support tab, select downloads
