Using Act with an external email service

I have been using Act for years and now finally have the ability to utilize the email functionality for the first time.  I am using ACT Pro 2012.  I have an email account with a company called 1 and 1 that I am trying to integrate with Act.  Here is my situation.


I attemp to set up by the process of email preferences - email system setup - internet mail - add.

      - Step 1 asks for the following:

                   Account name: i use email address

                   Real name: i use email address

                   Organization: I enter my org name

                   Email address:  I enter email address

                   Reply address. I enter email address

            (not sure if this is correct procedure or not)


     - Step 2 is SMTP info (outgoing)

     - Step 3 is Pop3 (incoming) 


When I "check connectioon" I get message that cannot connect to server.


However - when I send an email through Act to someone, they receive it.  When I log into the 1and1 email account - there is no trace of the sent email.  The recipient says the email comes from the correct email address.


I am puzzled as to the lack of connection - the email that is actually generated - and the lack of an outgoing mail from the email host.  


Any help would be very appreciated.
