Unstalled ACT! (10) and Now Won't Reinstall - earlier version detected(?)

About a month ago I experienced that ACT! 2008 address books were not getting listed on Outlook, so I searched the Forum and found that a similar condition existed with ACT! 2007. The recommendation was to uninstall and reinstall. I did this and it fixed the problem. The condition returned. I tried the same process. I uninstalled using the ACT! Uninstall and began the re-install using the wizard. All screens were cycling through until I got an error at the end. So it didn't install. I tried a reinstall and now I get this error message: "An earlier version of ACT! has been detected. To install{0}, uninstall your previous and start this installation again." Since I uninstalled the previous version, there are no ACT! files. What can I do to get this program to install and my data? Any help is much appreciated.

Re: Unstalled ACT! (10) and Now Won't Reinstall - earlier version detected(?)

This is a procedure I wrote to get the most clean install possible:
Uninstall any version of ACT! from Windows Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs
Use the Uninstaller.exe from the ACT! KB 19338 (the exe, not the manual uninstall)
Uninstall .Net Framework (all versions) - this does NOT apply to Vista users as .Net 2.0 is part of the OS and can't be uninstalled
Uninstall any MS SQL items from the Control Panel if istill there
Uninstall MSXML Services from Control Panel if it's still there
Perform a Selective restart with MSCONFIG as per ACT! KB 14499
Install .Net 2.0 Framework from MS web site (only for XP, not Vista)- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en
Manually install MS SQL as per ACT! KB 19386
Install ACT! 10
Install ACT! 10.01 patch if the previous install was the previous build
Restore from Selective Startup Mode with MSCONFIG
Reboot

Re: Unstalled ACT! (10) and Now Won't Reinstall - earlier version detected(?)

Mike,
I went religiously through your list and got to the point in the MS SQL install (figure 114) per ACT! KB 19386 asking for Instance Name. I select Named Instance "ACT7", as directred, and get the following condition and message, which prohibits me from proceeding to the Service Account screen:

"The following components that you chose are already installed on the machine."
A file name is ghosted: SQL Server Database Services 9.2.3042.0 (Search did not find file.)
The Details... message says -
Installation Options:
The list below shows installed components and upgrade options.
"Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (ACT7)
Allowed Action: Maintain (Action is only available from Add or Remove Programs)
Reason: Cannot maintain product, to maintain the product go to Add or Remove Programs"

I've tried other Named instance names without success. I've search my hard drive for instances of ACT7 and deleted one instance perf-ACT&sqlctr, a Configurations Settings file, which did not work.

Any further suggestions? Thanks for your help.

When you ran the Uninstaller.exe, you should select to remove ACT! SQL entries... it's a check box

Mark, the installation is successful. Thanks for your help. Now ACT! won't let me access the databases I had converted to v10 a month ago and was using until the crash. Error message is "operating system error 5 (Access denied.)" Nothing comes up when searching ACT!'s KB. Thank you if you've come across this as well. - Paul
