Unique Contact ID

Hello all.  Using Act! 2005, and am very new with it.  I assume that Act! must store a unique contact id somewhere for each contact record.  Is there a way to pull this information into the GUI so that a user can see it and reference it?

Thanks, I've searched through the other threads and can't find an answer.  Thanks!

Re: Unique Contact ID

As Roy mentions, the Contact ID, or GUID, is a "system field", and is not available to the endu user.  And as he mentions, its a long number, not usually of much use to an end user.

However, if you NEED to see this information, you might consider one of the ACT! Enhancement Products from The New Hampton Group - "Copy System Field".  Copy System Field lets you copy the contents of your selected "system field" (such as the Contact ID) to a "regular" field - either a field that's included as part of the default ACT! database (such as User 1), or a user defined field that you add to the database (such as "RcdID").  (If you define the field, be sure to make it at least 48 characters long, to hold the entire GUID.)

You'll find full information about Copy System Field at www.tnhg.com/prod9/index.html and www.tnhg.com/prod7/index.html, depending on which version of ACT! you are running.

Hope that helps,

Geoff

Re: Unique Contact ID

The contact unique ID field can be used in reports and can be accessed through the SDK but there isn't any provision for viewing that field in the layout. It's a vary large binary number and would not be particularly useful for reference.

Re: Unique Contact ID

Instead of using the GUID, is there anyway that ACT can auto generate a separate or smaller number?  I was looking at adding a "reference number" that people could quote and be searched for easily in ACT?

Re: Unique Contact ID

Just wanted to add to my question above - I'm using ACT! 2009 (v.11)

Re: Unique Contact ID

There currently isn't a feature for this.  There are third party addons that will provide this functionality

Re: Unique Contact ID

Thanks David,

Just one other question, does the Contact ID/GUID go in seqeuence "xxxxx1, xxxxx2..etc" in a database or how does the ID get generated?

Re: Unique Contact ID

It doesn't go in sequence. It uses a comples algorithm to create a unique binary number.
