I am also getting this error while trying to sync a remote client. The remote client receives the error at "Synchronizing records and updates" the first three steps complete successfully.
I did notice that the remote client is on Hot Fix 3, while the server is on Hot Fix 1. Will this cause my syncing issues?
I have tried changing the buffer size on the server and the remote client (link below).
I have also performed the "Fix Known Activity Data issues" under the actdiag tool.
I have not been able to try the following suggestions yet, but will be trying this at the end of the day so i don't disrupt the internal ACT users.
(Run backup of master DB, Run Maintenance on master DB and remote DB, Shut down ACT on server and remote computer and restart server, Open ACT on server and remote computer.)

Normally for sync or database sharing to work correctly, all versions need to be on the same version of ACT!, down to the letter. So if one has hotfix 3, the other probably needs hotfix 3 as well.
