Sync with out a server.

Sync with out a server.

I was speaking with a guy that had ACT! 2003, and he had been able to sync without being on a server. He said he would tell it to sync and it would send a file in email. (I am not familiar with that process of syncing. This goes back further than my time with ACT!) Now he has a more current version (2010) and wants to sync that same way, or at least in a way that he is not networked on a server. Is it possible that he can sync like he had done in the past?  Would he need to set up premium via web or is there another possible way?

That was a method of synchronization with ACT! 3-6. It was a kludge, hard to setup correct and very prone to failure. That method is no longer available. Synchronization is now direct and requires a LAN or VPN to do the synchronization.

Re: Sync with out a server.

There is often the statement that ACT! 'needs' or 'requires' a VPN to setup synchronization. Does anybody care to expand on that?

Does it matter if you have Premium version or Pro version if you want to set up the VPN?

No, it doesn't matter ... Premium means ACT! doesn't need to be open and logged into the database from the remote to sync

Graeme, it just needs a "direct connection" ... for many users, a VPN is easier than setting up port forwarding and administering the network security

Re: Sync with out a server.

So the point to be made is that having a VPN is an option however it isn't needed/required as is often the misnomer. The ACT! sync bit stream is protected by private / public key encryption.

Re: Sync with out a server.

It's not the bit stream, but the leaving open of a port that:
1. Connects to a service that might have undiscovered vulnerabilities
2. Connects to a service that a future update might create vulnerabilities
3. Might be hijacked by another service via some malware

Re: Sync with out a server.

Not that out of the realm of possibility ... a McAfee update in Jan did option 3 and at least one malware writer took advantage of it.

As to options 1 and 2 ... this happens all the time.

Possibility the main reason it hasn't happened - not enough users. And, as Apple has found out, when you get enough users, the malware guys look more closely - Apple were even advised by their own lawyers to remove the message that they don't get viruses:
