Solutions for painfully slow ACT 9.0?

I have been using ACT 9.0 (Version 9.0.1.162, Hotfix 1,) for many months now and while it technically works, it is painfully slow. Information about my computer is provided at the end of this message. One of my database has 18,000 contacts and the other has 800 contacts and the problem occurs with both.

Loading ACT, loading the database, navigating the database, adding notes, etc., is just painfully slow. To the point where ACT is not really a productive tool to use - one where you can quickly get the info you want and update it. It has been like that since day 1 so it's not a sudden issue.

Any suggestions as to how to diagnose of there is a problem or to confirm that... that's the way ACT is?  Also, any suggested solution to speed up ACT?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Solutions for painfully slow ACT 9.0?

I would expect your system to be very slow in ACT! with only 512 MB RAM. Increasing it to 1 gig would help. You also did not list your hard drive RPM which I suspect is 5400 RPM, possibly even 4200 RPM. Getting a 7200 RPM hard drive would improve performance.

As Roy stated, 1GB RAM and a 7200 rpm drive will be a big change for ACT!.

In the mean time, defrag the drive and set the Page File to 2GB min and max. Turn off Video acceleration (only needed for games, but slows down other apps). Also remove any temp files in c:\Windows\temp and in %temp%

Re: Solutions for painfully slow ACT 9.0?

Hi FC

I also am having issues with the speed of this package. I upgraded to two GIG, defraged my database of 7500 records, removed old history , re indexexed, loaded Hotfix 3 and I am still getting the hour glass of death or the "Loading" pop up when I try to clear an activity or go to my daily calender.

In other threads I see that many people are saying upgrade to 2008 and many problems will be solved.

I will not reward incompetence with more of my money. I am now ACTivly looking for an alternative.

My needs are pretty simple. If anyone knows of a package that had the same features of ACT 2000 with the addition of attaching files to the mail merge process pelase let me know.

Thanks

How fast is your hard drive in RPM?

Have you purged old/cleared activities in ACTDIAG?
