I have a Smart Task issue. What else is new?
I am trying to desperately justify using Smart Tasks, but I am saddened at how this thing works.
I create a Smart Task and I choose "Automatically schedule activity without prompting the user". If the user is not viewing the task list, the task shows up 4 times, If the screen layout is "showing" the task list, it only shows the activity once(which it should).
What can justifty the use of Smart Tasks it if it doesn't work?
There are absolutely tons of things in ACT! that literally wastes time. Smart Tasks wastes a mind because it doesn't work.

I have the same problem (double entries) and share your frustration with Smart Tasks. Unfortunately most complaints fall on deaf ears. I think the reason for this is that the vast majority of Act! users are not interested or have given up on Smart Tasks long ago.
There is little practical information available on how to apply ST, no integration with Outlook, limited functions and bugs.

I Googled "ACT Smart Task Complaints" and found this thread.
For nearly 3 years our firm used Smart Tasks without a hitch. We've been told by numerous swiftpage that how we use Smart Tasks is very unique, since we some times have as many as 13-14 individual steps, a combination of text emails and HTML emails.
This summer we upgraded to Premium Pro with web access and have had nothing but problems ever since. Our first clue was when a client emailed us telling us to chill out and to stop sending 4 of the same email. Sure enough, we checked the history and we have clients who have received anywhere between 3 and 6 of the same HTML template.
Our wonderful ACT specialist has done her darnedest to get us the assistance we need but the Swiftpage people seem to be completely clueless.
My concern is the same as another I read, that since so few ACT users use Smart Tasks, fixing this issue will take such low priority that we may never get this fixed.
Unfortunately, I'm the one that talked the rest of our firm to embrace and invest in ACT, and now I'm the one with egg on my face.

I was excited when Smart Tasks were first introduced in 2010, at last a basic workflow solution included in Act!. I upgraded for ST but I was soon very disappointed, but despite the problems I gave Act! the benefit of the doubt and waited for improvements in 2011, 2012 and 2013 but bugs persisted and there has been few improvements. FYI, Exponencial Add-ons provide a much better options to the so called features added to Smart Tasks over the years.
3 years later one still can't send an email with merge fields and Outlook from Smart Tasks, amazing.
I have also had ongoing problems with Smart Tasks, duplicate steps, sometimes 2, 3 and 4 times. Technical support is not helpful because they do not understand how to use it.
There are very few posts re: ST, my guess is that very few people use it probably because they don't work.
Would be helpful if other members would weigh in on their experience with ST but alas my guess is that users have decide that this dog's breakfast of a feature is not worth their time.

The company for which I work hired me to get their ACT back on track after it crashed a few month prior. All the smart tasks had been lost and so I started developing new ones. My smart tasks follow the exact format as indicated in the training manual and videos and yet they won't trigger past the first step. The software provider came to try and assist me but also couldn't figure out why my smart tasks weren't working. The options I was given was to either seperate my smart task steps into individual activities and then train the staff to trigger the next step manually but this creates more work than our current system that operates without the use of ACT. The second option given to me was to buy the new version. I have only been with this company for just under a month and it is my job to fix ACT, there is no way I can justify buying a new version if the one we have has never operated properly in the 2 years they have owned it.
Has anyone got V16 advice for me? Is it worth trying to convince my bosses to spend more money on this "world leading software" or is it riddled with the same smart task and mail merge issues V14?

I have a suggestion for you for this "world leading software". Yes, I do put it in quotes also.
I started this thread and found an answer to some of the Smart Task issues. Try to put a 1 minute delay in between steps no matter if there is an existing delay step already present. In other words, put a one minute delay in between steps and ADD a 1 minute delay in additon to another delay that MAY already exist.
Also, make sure you have all the hotfixes etc. I think you might be surprised with thee results. It might have started working for me.
Of course, I can never be 100% sure with this "world leading software". I hope Swifpage got a market value discount on the buyout of this software..

Funny you should say that, our software provider support guy did exactly that when trying to determine why they weren't working. There are 1 min delays between each step (even those with delays already)... BUT... Hotfixes? Haven't come across them yet. Will look into it when I am back in the office on Monday, but it's home time for me here in South Africa and my weekend couldn't have come soon enough!
Thanks for your suggestions. I will report back once I've got the hotfixes.
