Searching Memo field for whole word only

ACT! by Sage 2009 (11.0) Version 11.1.183.0, Hotfix 4

Is there a way to find whole word only in a memo field - very much like the simple find/replace feature in MS Word.

We have a tab on Contacts Layout called CV which contains a memo field.

This field contains the text of CVs/Resumes

Now, if I am looking for someone in Financial Services in the UK who may have worked for ING Bank I could create query as below

Industry Contains Financial Services AND

Country equals United Kingdom AND

CV Contains ING

However, the results are any contacts whose CV has the ING letter combination in it.

A work around is to apply a keyword search on the lookup based on Industry/County to get the phrase ING Bank, but not everyone gives the full title of employers past and present.

So, can you look for whole word only and/or can you create/save an advanced query with a keyword?

Many thanks for your help and suggestions

Re: Searching Memo field for whole word only

You might try:

[^a-z]ING

Character before ING NOT a letter

Mill[^a-z]

Char after Mill NOT a letter

Not sure if the search allows this, but give it a try

Re: Searching Memo field for whole word only

I'm not sure... and searches aren't case-sensitive, either. You might try:

_ING
_ means a single char, not sure if it works for a word

[ING]
[] finds data in a range or set

You might post a request for this feature to be considered for a future version here -

Input from this web page goes directly into a database that management has direct access to read, and which they also track and gather statistics on. It also allows other users to vote on these so Sage can get an idea of the demand

This article might help word the request to make it easier for management to look at it

Re: Searching Memo field for whole word only

Dear Mike

Thank you for your reply.

I tried the search using criteria Mill with your suggestions as I know that there a couple of people who have within their CV Mill Road, or Mill House, etc.  Search results were huge.  Still found Mill in Million, millenium, millers etc.

And thank you for the link on how to post a suggestion.

Kind regards

Linda

Re: Searching Memo field for whole word only

Dear Mike

It worked!  Thank you ever so much.

By using [^a-z]mill[^a-z] gave a result of 12 Contacts. It treated mill as a whole word.

Where as without the code on either side the search results were 152 Contacts, the majority with million, milleniuem etc.

You have saved me a huge amount of work.

Thanks again.

Excellent... I had a couple of other ideas, but they would have taken more time to research than I like to do for free :-)
