I am using ACT! Pro 2012. My database is hosted on a Windows XP PC, and I'm trying to access it from a Windows 7 PC.
Out of the blue last week, remote access to the shared database from my Windows 7 machine was cut off, giving an error message that said the "SQL database instance" was unavailable.
I have followed all of the various potential fixes I could find on this website, to no avail. I have even uninstalled both SQL and ACT! on both machines, but still I was getting the unavailable SQL instance message. Once or twice this message has been replaced by a "this database is not shared" message (this is untrue, the database IS shared), but the consistent error is SQL unavailable.
This error seemed to appear out of nowhere, and none of the established fixes seem to work. I am struggling to identify the cause of the issue, but really need to get this resolved.
Could somebody please advise?

It's usually one of two things. Either you have two different versions of ACT! running on the two machines or there is a firewall issue. Judging by the other error message that you got it's possible that there is an access issue with the shared folder (ie. the remote user doesn't have access).
