SQL Server (ACT7) timeout on startup

SQL Server (ACT7) timeout on startup

New installation of ACT v16 with hotfix 4 (downloaded 11/28/13). Windows 7. Starting from scratch, not upgrade and no old database. DB is local and not shared. Trying to eval ACT! for potential purchase.

Install completes without errors. Run ACT! Cannot open sample DB or create new. Noticed that SQL Server (ACT7) not running. Try to run and it won't start. Error indicates timeout before completing.

Completely uninstalled ACT! and all SQL Server items. Re-install. Same problem.

Searched on these forums and found the long article with possible solutions. Almost all are not relevant. None that I tried worked.

I'm not about to uninstall and reinstall SQL Server manually as that is not a reasonable approach when paying this kind of money for software. So unless someone can tell me it will absolutely work and why it is necessary, that will unfortunately disqualify ACT from consideration.

Very appreciative of any advice. Thanks in advance.

Re: SQL Server (ACT7) timeout on startup

Further 8 hours of debugging and no progress. Here is the latest.

Problem is still that sqlservr.exe will not start. Started on cmd line and here is the output. Error is Login failed for user 'ACTACCESS'

Re: SQL Server (ACT7) timeout on startup

That means that SQL didn't get installed properly.  The easiest way to fix it is to uninstall SQL and reinstall but you will need to make sure that you remove any traces of the first install before the second install.  You should also run the installer as an administrator (right click and choose run as administrator).

Re: SQL Server (ACT7) timeout on startup

Thanks for taking a look, Stan. Yes, cearly an issue with the installation. So I have uninstalled, completely cleaned (file system and registry) multiple times. Even downloaded SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 from microsoft. Ran as Administrator following ACT! manual install guide. Fails with error as below. Unable to start service right inside installation. HELP!

Re: SQL Server (ACT7) timeout on startup

These can be quite difficult to resolve.  I notice you have a hyphen in your system name.  It isn't supposed to make a difference but I would try removing it and see what happened.  Another possibility is that you have a bad .NET install so you could try removing the various versions of .NET and reinstalling them.  Barring that you can look at the SQL log files and you may be able to figure out what the real cause of the problem is.
