I understand that ACT! reports default to search by Company and then by contact.
That's not correct. Some reports templates have a built in sort, others use the presort of the database and that can be different depending on whether you select to run the report for all contacts or the current lookup.
I also understand that you can change the default sort to run reports. However, when I change my report to Sort by State and then by Company it isn't working. Any suggestions or ideas on what I am doing wrong?
Without information on what you did to change the sort in the report, I can't say.

This was on a certain lookup, I went to Edit and Sort. Changed it to sort by State first and then by Company. I then ran a report that I created.

Is there a sorting feature in the reports that excludes companies that dont have any Opportunities/Contacts?
I used the Company Comprehensive Report, removed all the sub reports except Contacts, modified some other fields and run the report
It did not list all the company's
Any ideas??
Thanks

Never mind I answered my own question
For those with similar issue there is a tag in the "Detail" section that allows it not to display if subreports are empty
