I cannot get Universal Search to work. I am typing in a company name for a company I know exists in my database. I am telling it to search Contact. No results found. I have tried other data too, e.g., zip codes. Same result.

Just a quick question - did you just install and/or open a new database? I think there's a lag between when it's first accessed and the search index being built.
I've searched for full and partial company names, contacts with and without linked companies, and I get results each time.
p.s. also, did you leave the dates as All Dates?

these are all old databases but using a new version of ACT, ie 2012. Regarding the dates, i do not have that option. I went to view/search and just got one bar to type information. Is this the Universal Search new in ACT 2012?
