I have just installed ACT! 2005 and I am trying to import contacts. I go to the Import wizard and the first question it asks is "What type of file do you want to import?" The only gives me 5 different options (ACT! Database 7.x, ACT! Database (3.x - 6x), dbase, Text Delimited and Goldmine). It gives me no option for Exchange, Outlook or even Excel even though help says these are supposed to be available . I have updated ACT! with the most recent updates and nothing has changed. After I updated ACT! it gave me an error that said transaction cannot be complete.

From where do you wish to import data? You cannot import directly from Exchange or Excel with the ACT! import wizard.
You can import from Outlook, however, it is best to export your Outlook contacts to Excel. Outlook data is usually "messy" as people do not place data in the correct fields. Tidying the data in Excel allows you to delete columns not required and move phone numbers to the correct fields (mobile numbers especially).
Save the data as a .csv file (text delimited), which can then be imported into ACT!

We have all of our contacts on a exchange serve that we need to pull from. We also have Outlook. Those are the two main places we need to bring contacts from. What do you mean we cannot import directly from exchange or excel? It says under the help function that it is not a problem to do that (pasted below). You said that we can import from outlook but it is not even giving us that option in the drop down list as I told you about in my previous message.
Thanks for your help
About importing and exporting data
There are several ways to import and export data: using the Import and Export Wizards, importing or exporting records attached to e-mail messages, importing or exporting product lists and drop-down list values, and export list view data to Microsoft Excel.
Using the Import and Export Wizards, an Administrator or Manager user can import data to and export data from ACT! databases and other software programs. For example, you can import records from another ACT! database or from another program such as Microsoft Outlook or Palm OS Desktop. You can export records to another ACT! database or to a delimited text file.
ACT! databases version 3.x - 6.x, 7.x
dBase - versions III or IV (contacts only)
Lotus Organizer - delimited text
Maximizer -delimited text
Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003
Microsoft Outlook 2003 with Business Contact Manager
Microsoft Access - delimited text
Microsoft Excel - delimited text
Palm OS Desktop
Peachtree contact information -delimited text
QuickBooks contact information - delimited text
SalesLogix - delimited text
vCalendar/iCalendar - .vcs
vCard - .vcf

Well you can import from Outlook and the Exchange address books can be displayed in your Outlook, (assuming you have the appropriate permissions), so you may also be able to access the Exchange data from your Outlook.
If Outlook is not showing as an option in the Import Wizard, then ACT! may not know that Outlook is installed. Check this article in the KnowledgeBase 14425 for troubleshooting.
You can import from an Excel file saved as delimited text, (.csv) but not a standard Excel file (.xls).
However, the best way, in my opinion, is to export the address book data from Outlook/Exchange to Excel and tidy up the data there, prior to importing into ACT!.
