Periodic and manual backups don't work

Among the numerous issues we're having with ACT, the worst is the following.

We have periodic backups that came out corrupted in the past, so we have moved our publisher database (by hand) on a brand new new machine. Full Windows install, full ACT install, hotfix 6, SQL SP1 patch and so on. Everything is 'state of the art'.

We have changed all the things that need to be changed to retain synchronisation, which works.

We have repaired, reindex the database and what not. The DB works just fine.

However, all the backups that we do are not functioning. Not a single one. We can do it manually, we can include or exclude attachments, we can try to restore from the software or from actdiag.exe but the backups do not work.

Here's a typical message we get if we restore from software

and from actdiag.exe

The database is nowhere to be found. Now, we're talking about backups, which is a VITAL piece of any software.

We can tolerate

but this is VITAL. What can we do to solve this?

Re: Periodic and manual backups don't work

This looks like a problem with the log file.  I suspect deleteing and recreating the log file would solve the problem.  It's possible that the problem would recur but I suspect it wouldn't.  Sounds like you've had more than your share of problems with ACT!.  It's possible that there were some disk problems on the server that you moved ACT! off of.  That's what the log file problem sounds like.  When you copied the database over to the other system you moved the corrupt log file along with it.

Re: Periodic and manual backups don't work

Have you tried doing a backup and restore of the ACT! demo database?

Re: Periodic and manual backups don't work

Backing up and restoring a clean database works fine.

This is clearly related to a non-trivial, rich database.

Any suggestions?

Re: Periodic and manual backups don't work

Most likely there is internal corrupting in your database that isn't being cleared by the available field repairs. You likely need to consider using a database repair service.

Do you have any suggestion on how to delete and recreating the log file?

Re: Periodic and manual backups don't work

OK, problem solved.

Step zero, I backed up the plain adf and all the other database files.

Then I tried to delete from actdiag.exe, with no success.

So I detached the database with actdiag.exe and deleted the files manually.

I then copied *only the adf* and restored the database with 'Missing log file'.

The restore from the adf went fine and recreated the log file.

Now I can produce .zip files with no corruption in the log file, and I can restore them on other machines.

Re: Periodic and manual backups don't work

Glad you got it figured out.  Since you're on a different machine hopefully it won't happen again.
