New User Opportunity Question

I have about 40,000 prospects/contacts.  Should I create an oportunity for each one?  If so, is there anyway to automate the process?

My best practice would be to not make an opportunity until there is an  actual deal.  An opportunity should have a timeline, scope, decision maker.  Until then, i'd track them at the contact level.  Track the people untill the people tell you about the deals, then make opportunities from the deals.  Much less data entry involved.

Thank you Jon.  That sounds good.  I'll create a contact custom field to indicate the pre-deal status.
