New Phone Number Can't Be Dialed After Entry and Save

I was wondering if any of you who use the dialer have added a new phone number, saved the entry (Ctrl-S), and then tried to dial that number?

 

For as long as I can remember, ACT makes me go to another contact record and come back before I can use that number in the dialer.  Is this an issue with me or is this happening with everyone else?
