Narrowing a contact activity lookup

Does anyone know if this is possible or if it can be made to be possible? When I do a lookup by Contact Activity and then do a lookup by example. It only gives me the option to replace the lookup. The two other choices (narrow & add) are grayed out.

You won't be able to do narrowed lookups switching from Contact Activity to Lookup By Example.  As an alternative, try doing a lookup of the Edit Date field. You can then narrow that with a Lookup By Example.

Does this edit date cover any change in the contact record?

Yes, it covers any type of change to the record, but you can then narrow it with an Advanced Query, another Lookup, Keyword Search, or Lookup By Example.

When a call rolls over to the next day does that constitute as an edit?

Yes, as this would create a change to the contact's activity that is being rolled over (activity date is being changed to the current date).
