I have almost same problem myself now.
I had pc fail and already had spare pc standing by, so i restored my stuff from act backups and personal files.
I had installed ms office - outlook2013 desktop, etc.. prior to installing and .
All pc and office and act updates current. Act! Pro Version 17.1.169.0, Hot Fix 3
Fresh new system 3g cpu 8g ram... win7 pro dell
So here r the details.
I have a contact and a opportunity record with with a pdf and a .txt file attached.
I am unable to open my .txt file from inside ACT! ... The pdf file opens fine.
If I delete the .txt attachment from the contact record, I am still unable to open the attached .txt item on the opportunity record.
Nothing happens when I attempt to open the attached .txt file from within ACT!.
Swiftpage, I think we need another FIX?
Anyone else having this problem yet? - FSB

I just tested it on Act! v17.1 using shortcuts and attaching the document and all of the text files open fine. I haven't heard of anyone else with the issue. I suspect that it has something to do with your environment.

Hey Stan,
Yep, It is definately something in my environment and that something is called ACT! v17.1...
Fresh Win7pro PC and ACT! Install. . In my case, there is a pdf doc and a .txt doc attached. The pdf opens and the .txt does not.
When enough users have this bad environment, Swiftpage may eventually figure it out and fix it?
