Move Act 6 database from Windows XP to Act Pro v.18 on Windows 10

We are currently running Act! 6 on Windows XP.  We have purchased new Windows 10 computers and Act! Pro v. 18.  How do I migrate the database from the old computer & version to the new computer & version?

Don't think upgrading from 6 to 18 actually works, so I installed Windows 7 and Act 12 on a spare computer and was able to perform that conversion.  Then I converted the version 12 database to 18 on the Windows 10 computer without any issues (that I know of).  A two-step upgrade.

Thanks for trying!

Hi there, the below article explains how to upgrade to version 18, including instructions on how to upgrade from version 6:

***PLEASE NOTE*** Make sure you have a backup before you upgrade

If you have a support contract with us then I would highly recommend you speak to technical support before you upgrade just to make sure you fully understand everything you need to have in place.

Re: Move Act 6 database from Windows XP to Act Pro v.18 on Windows 10

Thanks for the reference document.  I have performed the scan/repair on the database, but still cannot get the conversion working.  I always get the cannot access the file ‘pre7actdb.adb’ error, even with the ACT! 6 Demo database!  Here are the combinations I have tried:

Opening/converting ACT! 6 database on Windows 10 with ACT! 18

Opening/converting ACT! 6 Demo database on Windows 10 with ACT! 18

Opening/converting ACT! 6 database on Windows XP with ACT! 18

Opening/converting ACT! 6 Demo database on Windows XP with ACT! 18

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

After doing the repair did you logon to the database via ACT! 6 once as I'm sure when you perform a scan and repair some files are removed and then created again once you log back on. It's been that long since upgrading an ACT! 6 database I cannot remember if this is one of the files re-created.

Thanks for that suggestion, but it did not help.  What I find puzzling is that the ACT! 6 Demo data gives me the same error.  The documentation leads me to believe that the version 6 database can be converted to version 18, but I'm not sure if it really works or not.

What error are you getting?

The error is:

Conversion has been halted with the following message:  The process cannot access the file ‘pre7actdb.adb’ because it is being used by another process.

Yes, conversions between widely spaced releases of Act! will often fail due to the disparate schemas, best to do it in two steps.
