Modify Information in Protected Fields

Is there a way to modify the content of a protected field in Act 2009? We need to be able to insert a contract number for example (and other information, like price, payment amounts) but then that field protected so that no one can change the content once it has been inserted.

If the field is protected, I see no way of inserting new information from a brand new record. When we used Act 2000, there were third party programs that would insert content in protected fields and only the people who could use the third party programs could edit them. I hope you can help. Thanks

When marking a field a read only, nobody will be able to edit the field.  In the premium product, you have the option to mark read only for certain users.  This will allow only certain users to modify the data.

Thanks. So, in theory, in the premium edition, an administrator can insert data in a field that is read only for everyone else?
