I recently had to uninstall & reinstall my Act! 11 (2009). Since then I have had a lookup error with a long error message whiich starts with
System.UnauthorisedException:Access to the path (it named a path) is denied at System I.O._Error WinIOErro (Int32errorCode,String maybe Full Path
Then it won't perform a lookup on searches, such as by company, surname or first name. The other search fields seem to be OK.
I'm running Vista.

Can you test the demo database and see if you get the same error?
You may also try installing and reinstalling .NET, this can be tricky depending on what OS you are running.
First off try the lookup and in the demo and see if you get the same error

Have you tried right clicking on the ACT! icon and running as administrator?
Also try turning off your UAC that may help
