Is it possible to move ActPro 2013 database to from local to network drive?

I am using Act Pro 2013 as a single user running Windows 7.

Wondering if it's possible to move the database file on my network drive so it can be accessed by multiple PCs on my home network?  These are Windows machines running 7 to Windows 10.

If so, how would I do this?

Please let me know.  Thank you.

The database must reside on a drive local to an Act installation, which would be sharing the database.

Moving the database wouldn't be hard but Windows 10 would be a problem.

ACT! 2013 isn't compatible with Windows 10.

I understand. It appears Act Pro v18 supports Windows 10. Guess I would have to convert my database to this version.

Would this version allow me to move the database to network folder so it can be accessed by multiple Windows computers on my local network?

Yes it would.

You can find a Knowledgebase article on how to share a database between multiple machines here: http://kb.act.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13878

If you would prefer to see the sharing process in a video, you can find this in our Act Premium training library under Databases & Users: http://training-act.com/act/act-lib-prem/en-us/Launch.html

Re: Is it possible to move ActPro 2013 database to from local to network drive?

If I understand this correctly, I have to create a "remote database" and then sync between a database stored on my c drive to the remote database.

Is it possible to only have a single database which resides on a networked drive? I am the only user but would like to access on my local network from multiple computers.

I want to install Act on my computers without the database residing locally on either computer. The database would be stored on a network attached drive.

Please advise. Thanks.

Re: Is it possible to move ActPro 2013 database to from local to network drive?

Hi atomarchio,

There are 2 basic methods of having multiple machines access the same database:

  1. A Shared Database exists on one machine, and other machines on the same network can access and edit the same database simultaneously. Syncs happen in real-time.
  2. A Remote Database exists offline on each machine, and any changes that are made to the database are saved locally. The machine acting as the server will hold the Host database, and the remote databases will periodically synchronise with this database when they are connected to the same network.

I would recommend that you use a Shared Database in your scenario, as I assume all your machines are on the same network. The links I posted above describe how to set this up.

That make sense to use a Shared Database. In this scenario, can it reside on a networked drive?
