I'm a little confused on the concept of Contacts v. Companies. I just imported a file into Contacts. Do I now need to also import the file into Companies? Will that result in duplicate files?

The best way to clarify is that Contacts are individual people. There is a field on the Contact view called "Company". That isn't the same as a Company entity in ACT!. Think of a Company record as an account. Actually, when we train users, we interchange the term Company. Check out http://bit.ly/gCeF9y. There's even a link to a great add-on that will make easy creation of your Companies.
