Importing a TAB delimited list

I am importing a tab delimited contact list into ACT 2009.
Each record contains First Name, Middle Name, Last Name & other data. A Hex view of the file confirms a TAB seperates each field.
ACT ignores the import mapping of First, Middle & Last names. It imports all the other fields correct.
example:
First Name= John
Middle Name=
Last Name= Van Horn

ACT creates the following:
First Name= John
Middle Name= Van
Last Name= Horn

Anyone know how to force ACT to import First, Middle & Last names as mapped?

thanks

Re: Importing a TAB delimited list

Look in Tools -> Preferences -> General -> Name Preferences.

Here are separate lists of Name suffixes and prefixes that ACT "skips" when parsing the data in finding the First Name, Middle Name and Last Name.

If you remove Van from the Surname Prefix list, it will import fine

Re: Importing a TAB delimited list

Thanks for the reply.

The import fails on all contacts with multi word names.

 example

First Name= Billy Bob
Middle Name=
Last Name= Thorton

ACT creates the following:
First Name= Billy

Middle Name= Bob

Last Name= Thorton

or

First Name= John & Mary
Middle Name=
Last Name= Smith

ACT creates the following:
First Name= John

Middle Name= & Mary

Last Name= Smith

thanks

Re: Importing a TAB delimited list

I would start by creating  a sample of the same data but make it comma seperated variable and see if that makes a difference.
