Importing Contacts - automatically assigning them to a Group

Hi - we frequently have multiple new names to import into ACT! 2008, and we'd like them to automatically be assigned to an existing Group - is there a way to do that during the Import process?  If not, is there a way to do it directly afterwards?  We typically check each entry after the import, so they don't remain as a current lookup very long after the import.  Thanks in advance for any advice/info.

Regards,

Scott

Re: Importing Contacts - automatically assigning them to a Group

You can set up Group Rules so that contacts that match the rules will automatically be assigned to the group

Only database to database import/exprot will retain group mempership.  You'll need an addon product like MergeAdmin.

Can you provide a pointer to more information on Group Rules?  I don't see anything in ACT Help nor in ACT itself.  Sorry if I'm being dense.

got it - thanks.  This still doesn't solve my problem (there is no rule that will fit my current need), but it does help with other group options I need.  Appreciate it!

Re: Importing Contacts - automatically assigning them to a Group

If you add a field with the groups you want the contacts to be assigned to, then it should work.

Otherwise, what is your current need? Maybe a bit more information will make it possible to suggest something?

Re: Importing Contacts - automatically assigning them to a Group

you know what, you just nailed it.  We can add a field and put the name of the group we want the people to be assigned to in there - that will do it.  Sorry I didn't think of that, pretty simple!!  Thanks.

Re: Importing Contacts - automatically assigning them to a Group

Then add a Group rule for each Group or sub-Group.

Remember -  if you change that field later, the Contact will be removed from the Group.

If that's an issue, look up the members of the Group and make the Contacts static members.

Contacts can belong to multiple groups if you need them to be.
