It sounds like you have a mapping problem. Try starting the import wizard and be sure the left column(Excel information) matches the right column(ACT destination). You will have to expand the ACT mapping fields, I had the same type of issue because unless you expand the contact information it will be put into a different field than where you think it is going.

Another option is to have Outlook Contacts import the Excel sheet, then import the Outlook contacts into ACT.
It always seems that Outlook to ACT works so much easier.
