How to search for contacts

I'm brand-new to Act! 2011, and I can't even figure out the simplest thing.  This is very counter-intuitive.

I am staring at the contacts screen, looking at record 2 of 10.  Now, I want to find the contact named Bob.  Intuitively, I would place my cursor in the "Contact" Field, and hit Ctrl+F to bring up a find window.  No.  Ok, I have to click on the Magnifying glass (Search) button to search.  Ok, fine.  So I fill in the search window, but now I'm sitting on record 1 of 1.  It has FILTERED my list of contacts rather than merely repositioning me to the contact I'm interested in.  So, I have two questions:

1) Is there a keyboard shortcut to bring up the search dialog, rather than having to grab the mouse and click on the silly button.

2) Can you reposition on / navigate to another contact without filtering the list of contacts in the system, requiring further mouse clicks to go back, or click on "View all contacts" which switches me to an unwanted list view, rather than a detail view.

Thanks

Re question 1

ALT-L-N = Lookup contact

ALT-L-U = Lookup surname

ALT-L-F = Lookup firstname

ALT-L-C = Lookup company

Re: How to search for contacts

Thank you Jon for your response.  However, you've failed to answer either of my questions.  I'll repeat them because I mustn't have been clear:

1) Is there a KEYBOARD shortcut to lookup a contact?

2) How do you lookup a contact WITHOUT FILTERING your view to show ONLY that contact?
