Hello bmonroe,
Welcome to the Sage ACT! Community. An ACT! backup will be a .zip file with the database name by default. You can look in the Creation Data column in when viewing the files in Windows Explorer to see when the backup was made. To restore the database on a new machine, copy the .zip file from the flash drive to the Desktop of the new machine, then open ACT! on that machine, go to File > Restore > Database, choose the "Restore As" option, and select the backup file from the Desktop. Note that you will need to know the username and password for the Admin user in the database in order to restore it.

Hello BMonroe,

Welcome to the Sage ACT! Online Community!

Depending on which version of Sage ACT! the database is from, and how the back up was created, the files can have different extensions.

Assuming the files are from ACT! 2010...

- Manually copied files, look for:

  'database name'.ADF

  'database name'.ALF

'database name' - database files (folder)

If these are the files you have, move them to the local hard drive of the new computer.  You can then open the database using the 'ADF' file on the new computer.

- Backup through ACT! program:

You will have a zip file with the naming convention: 'databasename.zip'

If you have this file, move the file to the local hard drive.  Then you can restore the backup using the File > Restore > Database > Restore As option.  For further information on the Restore process, see this article: KB Article 19211

Hey Grieg, I found zip file (ACT! ServiceACT2007), but I can't remember user or password. Would this file ( ACT! ServiceACT2007) with 2007 in it be a database file backed from ACT2010? If my memory is correct, I had ACT2007 on a different computer in October 2006 and moved this database in June 2010 to a newer computer with installed ACT2010 .

There's no way to tell what version a backup (.zip) file is from unless you restore it. If it is 2007 and you restore it in 2010, then you will be prompted to update the database. As for the login, try variations of your name for the "username" and leave the password blank.
