How does the 'Enter Phone Number' box work?

[ Edited ]

I'm trying to figure out the 'test case' for the Enter Phone Number box.

It seems there's not a single case that works well.

With a new contact, the Country Code is added in front with the 'Format' chosen.

Then, I choose 'Free form' as 'Format' and it removes the Prefix. So far, so good.

Error #1

I open again the 'Enter Phone Number' box and click on 'Edit Formats...'.

For some reason, the +41 (I'm in Switzerland) code is still selected.

I click 'Free form' and 'OK', but ACT changes format back to +41 and changes the number accordingly.

Not good.

Furthermore, I choose 'Free form' as the default and each new contact has the +41 in front of it.

The only way to solve this is to delete the +41 on the 'Edit formats...' case.

Error #2

Formats are contact-dependent. Once I have finished the removing the 'Format' and leaving only the Free Format for a specific contact, I go to another client and the alternative Formats are still there.

How can I remove them and leave 'Free Form' for everybody?

Error #3 (Edit)

In some cases even the Free Format does not work.

ACT will put a [1] in front of the number for no reason (country is 'Switzerland', worst case scenario it should put [41]).

Have you entered your phone number and country on your My record?

Yes, My Record has both.

Could this have any influence?

Yes it does.

The first thing to understand is that the ACT! database stores the phone number in the TAPI canoncal form and what you see on the contact layout is an extraction of what is stored. When you have your phone number entered in the My record along with your country, phone numbers entered without a country code or with your country code will display without the country code but the stored number will include your country code. If you enter the phone number with a country code other than yours, the country code should display. If you plan on using the phone dialer, this is what you should use. I believe it also affects phone number searches.

I believe that Fre Form bypasses the tapi conversion and simply stores what you enter. For myself I avoid free form.

Re: How does the 'Enter Phone Number' box work?

This would be a very interesting answer, but ACT is not as simple as you describe it.

For instance: try to type the number directly in the Phone label and you will get a completely random behaviour.

Or: modify it in the box, then try to Undo. Sometime it does, sometimes it does not.

Given that this software is made for managing clients, they could have spent some more time on designing the architecture behind this. And many other things.

When I type a number into the phone field it works consistant with the way I described. However, it doesn't work if you paste a number into the phone field of try to modify a number in the field.

I don't doubt that your software works fine, but my doesn't.

Here's a screenshot of the typical view on a client opening shared database

ACT_Issue.png

No matter what I do, or where I click, I cannot remove the [1] in front of the phone number. Note that this is not event the country code for Switerland.

Maybe something went wrong somewhere, and the following issue

>> try to type the number directly in the Phone label and you will get a completely random behaviour.

is just another symptom. Any ideas?

Hi, this happens if you have a german/swiss/english Mix

Englisch  act needs to run on Englisch OS

German ACT needs to run on German OS,

act is comparing the countrycode with the os, and i.e. a german OS would not show switzerland.

so the easy fix is to have os and ACT with the same languge, alternative you can also follow the instructions on our KB and change entrys on your Windows registry

Re: How does the 'Enter Phone Number' box work?

Thanks, this is probably the issue.

However, I do not wanna start fiddling with country codes.

I'd rather have a pure free form and forget about it : how do I just remove the [1] from the phone number above?
