Help - I'm shut down -had un-successful upgrade from ACT!2008 to 2010

Short version; So Sages sales guy sent me a link to install ACT!2010. I am trying to upgrade from ACT!2008 10.3 std and the install took several hours, I attempted aborting install, then pc indicated that 2010 had installed. I opened and converted my 1st ACT! 2008 database and it appeared to have converted it ok, but now I cant re-open that database or even ACT!2010 at all.

Cant un-install either version now.  I tried to rebuild stuff using actdiag ..( is there a different diag utility for 2010? )

trying to open act2010 get msg;

resolution of the dependency failed;  "act.ui.actapplication",

name="". Exception msg is;  the current build operation (build key Build Key [act.ui.actapplication, null]} failed

value of "null" is not valid  for "stream" (strategy type build plan strategy, index 3).

So now I cant reach my sales guy and the last sales guy I just spoke to wants me to pay to clean this up.

1st guy isnt returning my calls or emails.

I took the advise of your sales guy and that shut down my business. Not even any 30 day limited free support?

This sort of thing makes it hard for me to suggest anyone buy ACT! or my ACT! Add-on product.

Except I dont do that to my customers.

I'm not sure what I have since the unistall of 2008 was prob not successful?  and the install of 2010 has issues?

Not sure what to unstall and re-install.

Would like to be using 2010 if someone one this forum can point me to the shortest route to recovery.

Thank you -FSB

Re: Help - I'm shut down -had un-successful upgrade from ACT!2008 to 2010

I'm talking about from the View All Opportunities view..

This seems like a huge oversite to me?

This should be a user option like the other fields, product name, cost, etc..

Sounds like I will have to continue my work around?

How about adding this field to the opportunities view someday? Sucks bad for Staffing / Recruiting needs.

I mean so the user can select it, or me..

Thanks - Bill

If your within 30 days of the purchase you are entitled to warranty support.

It does sounds like a botched install and two version of Act.UI are likely conflicting. I'd try to remove them both from Add/Remove if possible, if not you can follow this KB to manually remove Act.

Yeh thanks - I have that article. Still leaves me hanging.

Prob is;  as you said, remnants of the two versions seem 2 b conflicting and not sure which of each version needs removing manually.  Going to 2010(trial) was a temp solution for me to make prodcut changes before going to the new 2011 version in two months. Wish I had just waited two months.

Sorry Im going to hold back on further comments. You can prob read my mind rite now though.

Go through the manual removals of both version, there shouldn't be very many difference between them.

Once your back to a clean slate you can reinstall whichever version you'd like.

Thanks for your quick repsonse.

Any other tips before I attempt reinstall of 2010 version;

such as Should I install microsoft sql server 2007 myself prior to install of 2010?

add-remove does not show either product version.

thank you - FSB

Re: Help - I'm shut down -had un-successful upgrade from ACT!2008 to 2010

So Day#2, I am attempting re-install of act2010 STD on vista home prem 32bit - and it appears to be hung?

How many hours does this install take?     ACT! is finalizing installation..           meter bar is only approx at 10%

Am I missing something?  Why isnt this 2010 install smart enough to know what to do here? I sure don't.

Now I will have to abort this install again the hard way. Not even a cancel option.

What version of MS SQL server am I to use?  sql 2008 express ?   2005 ?  specifics anyone?

I already have .net 3.5 framework  and sql 2005 express etc...   Thank you - FSB

Re: Help - I'm shut down -had un-successful upgrade from ACT!2008 to 2010

SQL 2005 and 2008 can coexists peacefully, you just shouldn't have an instance by the same name under both DB types.

If your not seeing either in add remove this shouldn't be an issue, but you can double check in //Program Files/Microsoft SQL Server, there are typically subfolders by the name of the instance, same for the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\ACT7). Both of these locations are also mentioned in the KB article if I remember correctly.

Re: Help - I'm shut down -had un-successful upgrade from ACT!2008 to 2010

Thanks I'm making progress? maybe? Even though I aborted my install, ACT! 2010 appears to be working.

NOW TO THE ONE AND ONLY REASON I UPGRADED FROM 2008 TO 2010

SO I COULD CUSTOMIZE THE OPPORTUNITIES LAYOUTS AND BE ABLE TO DISPLAY THE PRODUCT  ITEM# FIELD.

GUESS WHAT - IT APPEARS THAT STILL, AFTER ALL THESE VERSIONs OF ACT!, I CAN NOT CUSTOMIZE MY OPP VIEW TO INCLUDE THE  ITEM#   field..

How can this be?

A key eliment for prob any opp and it is very much needed for my add-on staffing product.

Am I wrong?

Is 2011 going to allow this field to be displayed?

If yes, I will wait till 2011 is released before I make any new versions of my add-on.

Re: Help - I'm shut down -had un-successful upgrade from ACT!2008 to 2010

I have both 2010 and 2011 open in front of me and in both version on the product and services tab I can add the Item # column.

There is no item # field, so it can't be added to the opportunity layout. Products are a custom subentity with a public property of Item # which you could display in a variety of methods using the SDK.
