Fields That Effect Changes to "Fields You Cannot Change"

There are fields that are categorized as Fields You Cannot Change.  Could someone help me understand the action that causes these fields to change?  For example, in the help file it says for "Call Attempt" the date when you last tried to communicate with the contact and recorded a history.  What determines that a communication was attempted?

Call Attempt
Call Reach
Create Date
Days Open
Edited on/By
E-mail (Latest Activities)
Meeting

Can fields or activities be modified that when exercised it will send something to the field showing that a communication was attempted?

Just to go a little further than Roy's explanation - the call attempt/reach/meeting/letter sent fields are triggered when the history entry of that type is created for this contact.

So for example, a history of Type "Call", with the Result "Call Completed" would update "Call Reach" - where Type "Call" and Result "Call Attempted" or "Left Message" would result in the "Call Attempted" field updating instead.

Edited on/By is recalculated when ANY change is made to the contact and then saved, with edited by being the user that made that change.

Days Open in the opportunity section simply calculates the number of days from the open date that is on the record to either today - if the opportunity is still "open" or to the closing date, if it's "closed".

The field entry is made by the clearing of the associated activity or the direct creation of an associated history entry.
