2 hours ago I opened an existing database, one I have used on a number of ocassions, closed it down and now have difficulty in opening it again.
I select 'open database', navigate to the location of the database and click on the required database, logon window then appears with my name in the first box and the cursor flashing in the password box. I haven't assigned a password for the database so therefore click 'OK'.
Error message appears stating "The database could not be accessed"
Any suggestions around this would be greatly appreciated

If you are receiving a "database [database name] could not be accessed..." error for a local database, then it is usually due to the SQL Server not being started. Please see the 7th bulleted item in KB Article 19640 for instructions to restart. If this does not resolve, then this article has several other suggested causes and solutions.
Note: Effective 6/1/13, Sage no longers provides support for the Act! software. This is now provided by Swiftpage.
